Being gay in the 90s

The s, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and DOMA The 90's were a pivotal time for gay rights. While LGBTQ people were treated unequally, and often faced violence within their communities, a younger generation began to realize that LGBTQ people were entitled to the same rights as anyone else.
For me being queer in the 90s was fear, uncertainty and self loahting. So much so, that I harmed myself with it all while desperately trying to be "normal" like everyone else. I denied who I was, and ignored the warning signs of depression and anxiety that spawned as a result until I imploded under that weight.
